When choosing new Christmas traditions, some families get very nervous. They may feel that if they change the tradition – they are “taking away” Christmas from certain family members. It is important to involve every family member in the decision to make a change to Christmas traditions. This way each family member feels they have had their input and they feel comfortable.

There are so many things a family can do on Christmas – besides opening gifts and eating a large meal. The possibilities are endless! If your family is very into athletic pursuits you could all go skiing or ice-skating or hiking. But even though they may love Christmas cards, getting one’s Christmas cards sent out sometimes can seem quite overwhelming. In today’s world the average person knows about 50 to 100 people they can easily feel comfortable in sending Christmas cards to. That’s a lot of personal mail to manage all at once, especially when you include all of the other Christmas chores families have during this holiday time. Fortunately there are some ways you can organize your Christmas cards for success.

One of the best tips we can give you in order to send out your Christmas cards is to not plan on doing this entire chore in one sitting. Because while sending out Christmas cards is fun – it truly is a chore or errand – it is something we must take time out of our personal lives to do. When you think of getting the entire thing done at once it is so easy to push this to the side and say you’ll do it later. That’s when people often wind up looking at the calendar to realize it is December 26^th and it is too late to send their cards out! We suggest you do each of these mini chores, step by step.

Begin by making a master list of exactly who you’d like to send Christmas cards to. Add everyone you want to send a card to. You may have to narrow this list down, but get everyone out on paper in front of you. Keep this list somewhere handy.

From this list now find everyone’s current address. Remember to get a zip code for their address – or the Christmas cards will have trouble reaching them in time. Write down all of the addresses or keep them in your address book where they are accessible to you.

Now we enter the “preparation” phase. Time to pick out your Christmas cards and order personalization if needed. Remember that takes extra time. Order your Christmas mailing address labels. Get your Christmas stamps for mailing. Get a special red or green pen to address your Christmas cards. Keep all of your Christmas card supplies in one location, it can be anywhere you wish and it any type of container you wish – just in one location and one location only.

The week after Thanksgiving start addressing your Christmas cards while you watch television. This is an easy chore and you’ll likely get them done within a few days if not the week. Add the return address label and the stamp.

The second week write your family Christmas letter. Take it to the copy place to have copies made on Christmas paper. Sign each copy and fold it so it will fit in your Christmas letter.

The third week, begin writing your Christmas cards. It is ideal if you can add a short personal note to each. Write one or two sentences to each person you are sending a Christmas card to.

You are now at about December 10^th and your Christmas cards are ready to mail. Take them to the post office and mail them! Enjoy the holidays stress free.

What could look better on your front door than a freshly cut pine wreath? Add a few tiny ornaments and a big bow and you have a beautiful wreath to welcome visitors. You can easily customize your wreath using ornaments and ribbon from the dollar store.

 Poinsettias are another excellent choice to decorate inside your home. These are often sold in quantities at a discount at nurseries or even the grocery store. Poinsettias make beautiful inexpensive Christmas decorations. Add two, one on either side to your fireplace mantel. Add one to your kitchen table. Place several in your living room and family room. You’ve created a fresh and natural looking Christmas that is lovely yet very inexpensive!

Let your family member feel “at home” in your home. The most important thing when someone stays with you for Christmas is your guests’ comfort.

 To have the best time, avoid “hot button” discussions where you know you won’t agree. There are many family members who disagree on politics, moral issues or other concerns – yet love each other deeply as family should. Focus on having fun and creating memories as a family for Christmas. If a “hot button” topic is brought up, push it away so your guests can enjoy themselves fully.

Did you realize that many families do the same thing, over and over, every Christmas? Sometimes “the same” thing they do is something that everyone actually dreads or just finds a little boring. This is often a sign that your Christmas traditions are a bit outdated. When do you know if your Christmas traditions are outdated?

One of the biggest challenges families face in trying to discover if their Christmas traditions are outdated is often family members will not tell the truth about how they feel about these traditions. They want to be kind and loving to their family, and not hurt anyone’s feelings. These family members may be a little bored on Christmas but they figure it is a small price to pay. They would rather be together – than by themselves on Christmas.

Often in families there are a few family members who are in charge, usually the eldest members. It typically falls to these family members to speak up in a nice way that it is time to make some changes to your Christmas traditions. A very important factor is letting every family member “have their say” about changing Christmas traditions. When changes are made to traditions without input from other family members, they can take this as a very hurtful action. Letting everyone participate is helpful in creating a new Christmas tradition that everyone enjoys.

In choosing a new Christmas tradition, take an honest look at the old Christmas tradition and see what about it each family member likes or does not like. Perhaps one of the biggest challenges for everyone is traveling the far distance. Maybe they enjoy the tradition of coming together for a sumptuous holiday meal. Changing the location of the holidays could then be the best solution. But looking at the old Christmas tradition does help lead to the new Christmas tradition which makes everyone happy about the holidays.
